- Situation - a NetComm{1} Series 5 SmartModem M34F (SM3400), bought
- originally with 2.61C1 EPROM revision (since upgraded to the newest,
- 2.61L) when calling a USR{2} Courier V.34+ modem flatly *refuses* to connect
- to the USR at 28.8Kbps (average is either 24.0Kbps or 26.4Kbps, but
- sometimes drops to 21.6Kbps or even 19.2Kbps).
-
- The USR Courier has connections from interstate (QLD->NSW) at both
- 28.8Kbps and the USR's 33.6Kbps, so his end/USR is okay.
-
- The NetComm connects to other NetComms (NSW->NSW) and to the V.34 chips
- in the AscendMAX (NSW->NSW) at 28.8Kbps, so my end/NetComm is okay.
-
- But together, they just can't get their act together.
-
- I realise that connection speed doesn't really mean that the two will
- remain talking at that speed throughout the course of a session, but you
- *would* think that at least *one* connection would initially be at the
- full 28.8Kbps.
-
- Disabling calling tones, V.34 (ie., drop back to V.FC) on the NetComm
- doesn't help, either. Upgrading the Flash ROMs in both modems didn't help,
- either.
-
- NetComm is Rockwell-based, for those unfamiliar with it.
-
- Anyone have any explanations as to why both modems can most definitely
- connect at >26.4Kbps to other systems (so the lines/exchanges at our
- individual ends are seemingly okay), but together they refuse to connect
- at least *once* at 28.8Kbps?
-
- The USR is at +61-2-436-1785 for anyone wishing to try it and see what
- initial connection speed they get. It's a Fidonet system (3:711/934).
-
- Cheers, and thanks..
